Nelson Spinola graduated in 2007 from the University of the Western Cape in South Africa
with a BChD and was awarded the title of ‘Top Orthodontic Student’.
Nelson’s first job was in the Air Force assisting the soldiers and their families. With a keen
interest to help and improve the lives of the community, Nelson contributed to a
community outreach project for poverty-stricken nursery schools. The purpose of the
project was to educate teachers to identify eye and oral health diseases. Nelson coauthored
a handbook in association with the paediatric department of the University of the
Western Cape. The handbook was distributed to nursery schools which assisted carers and
parents to identify early signs of oral health concerns in children as medical care is not
readily available to these communities.
Within the same year, Nelson completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Implantology.
In 2009, Nelson began working for one of the largest privately owned dental insurance
practices in Southern Johannesburg. In 2012 he relocated to Pretoria to become the
principal dentist of a failing dental insurance practice. Using the clinical and business
experience gained over the years, Nelson was able to transform the failing practice into a
well-loved practice within 2 years.
As a new and exciting branch of dentistry was developing, Nelson took the opportunity to
move to Norfolk in 2017 to work in a digitally advanced practice. In 2021, he
completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Digital Dentistry, with a high first.
“Focusing on preventive measures and building trust and rapport with patients is key to my
practice. I am interested in the developments of digital dentistry and look forward to seeing
the profession grow, particularly in the areas of digital removable prosthetics as this can
increase the quality and efficiency of treatments provided to patients.”
